It's overwhelming for me, and I know if I feel that way, my players certainly will. I've got Forge and a hosted server, but there it seems even my purchased counts towards a limit, but R20 that doesn't happen, but they don't support some of the games I'm building (they're great for d&d and pathfinder - but those're the big dogs, I think everyone has support for those 2). I used realmworks for a while and I don't anymore. I'd like a place that I can put all the non-mechanical information and leave R20 (or even Forge) for the NPC sheets, tokens and maps. I'm blowing through my space on R20 quickly and I feel that the campaigns in running, all the information in putting in, is slowing the game down. I've been looking for a platform to use myself. The developers clearly take a lot of pride in putting out an excellent product. Any issues I've had were dealt with fairly quickly. It's a fantastic toolkit that's continually expanding. you can really easily import characters from D&D beyond into it.) but that Obsidian portal did the job when I was using it.Ĭlick to expand.Atch, that looks painful. World Anvil is a fantastic worldbuilding platform geared for writers and rpg-ers alike. So really, between the two I'd say World Anvil is better(it also has integrating with D&D Beyond now from what I understand, if that is important to you, i.e.
#World anvil free#
It also, even on it's free versions, has a larger limit on what you can upload in terms of pictures and such, which is important for some people, not others.

Making a World for say 5e is very easy and it provides you with alot of assistance in that regard. I will say it's learning curve is somewhat irritating, especially with regards campaign features, though these, I have understood, have become easier. It's linking is more organic than Obsidian Portal, it has better integration with a variety of features that might be useful. From the two I prefer World Anvil, enough that I've paid money for a yearly subscription and some of the elevated features. I run games that are often world building intensive, with large sections of information, and lots of things I want to remember later. I've used both Obsidian Portal and World Anvil and the answer, as others have observed, is largely dependent on what your using it for.
